* Two things I loved about Infibeam Pi ebook reader today,
Good One. I’m impressed.
this thing looks so damn cool! ever since i saw a review of it on ndtv gadget guru i have wanted to get my hands on one of these. but i guess at 10 grands, it a bit pricey as of now. nice shots and very useful info here. didnt know about local language support.
Kindle and Nook also run Linux. However, Kindle is pretty well locked-down (Tivo-ised) and B&N has been very slow to release full source code for GPL components of the Nook. It would be nice if this e-reader is genuinely hackable.
What is your general feedback about the piece ? Is it sturdy and, allows you to read comfortably ?
Is this device manageable with only Free software?
It is sturdy. First impression of hardware is very good. It has no backlight, which is in fact good decision.
It has magnetic display ie refresh rate is bit slow, but reading is ease. I tried couple of pages only though..
It mount as USB drive. Copy Paste the ebooks you want to read. Done!
Not many books are (legally) available as non-DRMed downloads, even not in Infibeam store. Which means I need to use Adobe Digital Editions to manage them and transfer them to Pi. Also Adobe DE does not have native linux version and I hate relying on apps that need wine to use. 😦
Surprisingly Adobe DE uses flash so I really don’t understand why it is so hard to create a linux version.
Hard to compare what’s available in different countries, but most e-readers I’ve seen are Linux-based. The other important consideration is what document formats are supported: for example, I’d consider an e-reader that had a problem with non-DRM PDF to be a complete waste of time.
Interesting. It looks a lot like the Kobo which will be available in Canada and USA shortly:
Also unlocked, read PDF + EPUB (which is a free open format), mounts as USB storage via standard USB cable and has an SD expansion slot. A bit cheaper too (starting U$149).

I bought Pi. The most important thing for me was reflowing PDF files. This does it so well. I need to read articles from wikipedia everyday and not that instantly. I write down terms while I study, then I open huge number of tabs in browser with wikipedia articles of those terms and print each with Bullzip pdf printer. This gets over within 15 mins. And there is no reason to waste time anymore… I read them as soon as I am free.
If you want to buy ebook reader, then preferably search google thoroughly before buying one. Most european models are touchscreen also, it will be so nice if it could be with Pi.
For now, I am fully comfortable with my Pi. No more eye problems and say no to glasses at “Size M” font.
